Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan Receives Netherlands Ambassador

On February 3, Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan received Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Armenia Nicholas Schermers.

Greeting the guest, the Deputy Premier highly appreciated the opening of the Dutch Embassy in Yerevan and praised the personal contribution made by Ambassador Schermers to the development of bilateral relations.

Thankful for the reception, Ambassador Schermers assured of his readiness to spare no effort to strengthen and deepen the Netherlands-Armenia relations. With reference to the Artsakh issue, the parties focused on the situation established following the Azerbaijani aggression against Artsakh, addressing in detail the issue of the return of prisoners of war.

The Ambassador was briefed on the current stage of the prisoner exchange process. Deputy Prime Minister Avinyan considered the latter a matter of top priority for the Armenian government. He thanked the Parliament of the Netherlands for their position on the Artsakh issue, as well as for adopting a resolution on extending humanitarian assistance to the people of Artsakh.

The meeting agenda also featured issues related to the Armenian-Dutch economic cooperation and Armenia’s economic reforms. Tigran Avinyan presented the steps taken by the Armenian government with a view to restoring economic activity in the country. The Deputy Premier spoke about Armenia’s intent to develop economic diplomacy, which should focus on attracting foreign investment, developing high-tech industry, promoting innovation and expanding multifaceted cooperation in science. The development of Armenian-Dutch interaction in agriculture, information technologies, finance and other spheres was discussed in this context.

The interlocutors hailed the ongoing effective cooperation between the two countries on the sidelines of in international financial institutions, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
